Response on Matt Miller’s statement

26.02.2024

Spokesman Anatoly Glaz answers the question of RIA Novosti about the statement of the official representative of the U.S. State Department on voting in Belarus

RIA Novosti: Can you comment on the statement of the official representative of the U.S. State Department Matthew Miller regarding the single day of voting in Belarus?

Mr. Glaz: We spent the whole night together with the Central Election Commission of Belarus looking for citizen Miller in the voter lists to determine which of the district commissions should respond to his complaint. We didn't find him.

Then we held in-depth consultations with lawyers to understand what the U.S. State Department has to do with the elections in our country. We also found no connection. After that, we tried to find in international law a definition of the role of the U.S. as an evaluator of the electoral process in independent states. Found nothing of the sort.

In this connection, from a legal point of view, we see no reason why we should listen to the statements of the U.S. Department of State about a single day of voting in the Republic of Belarus.

At the same time, we strongly recommend that the current American administration introduce a mandatory test for its employees on their knowledge of the basics of international relations and international law, of which the UN Charter is a part. There is a lot of important information there, including sovereignty, independence and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states.

In order to relieve excessive anxiety over the ocean, we note that on February 25, 2024, the single day of voting in the Republic of Belarus was held — as it should be in a sovereign state — under the protection and in full compliance with the Belarusian legislation.

And we have no objection if the elections in the United States, however strange they may seem to most countries of the world, are held in full compliance with the American legislation.

As for diplomacy and the direct competence of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry and the U.S. Department of State, we once again reaffirm our openness to an equal and mutually respectful dialogue with the American side.
